From the Desk of the Mayor October

December 2, 2016

Dear Citizens of Belleview,

I am happy to say that our city made it through the last storm with minimal damage. I am also happy to see how well prepared our public works department and police department were, in the event that the weather had been worse than it actually was. We have a very efficient county emergency management team, who works closely with our officials to ensure that everyone is prepared to handle any dangerous situations.

When our dedicated police officers are not busy protecting the community, they often find other ways to help those in need. One of their pet projects is “Shop with a Cop.” This program provides Christmas gifts to needy children in our community, and, as an added bonus, the kids get to shop with their favorite police officer. This year, the Belleview police department is holding a 5k race in order to raise money for this charitable event. The 5k will be held at 12 noon on the same day as our Christmas Parade – Sunday, December 11, 2016. It will begin and end at Cherokee Park. Please visit to sign up or call Jody Backlund at 245-7044.

In other news, the amended city charter will be on the ballot in November. This amended document modernizes our charter, eliminating outdated positions. It also extends the mayor’s term to four years, to match the terms of the other commissioners, and it requires a super majority vote and a referendum of the citizens to pass any measure designed to disband the police department. This puts a decision of a serious caliber directly in the hands of the people.

The city is also updating our website. The new and improved website should be up and running in a few weeks, with our new mobile application to be available shortly thereafter. This app will allow citizens to quickly pay their water bills, report a problem, or view upcoming events, as well as other features. Any suggestions as to what the app should encompass are welcome!

Please join us for our next regular commission meeting, to be held on Tuesday, November 1st at 6:00 PM.
